October 2018: Defra consultation, under 12m inshore VMS

Posted on 4th October 2018

Defra are seeking your views on the introduction of Inshore Vessel Monitoring Systems for all licensed British fishing boats under 12 metres in length operating in English waters.

Vessel monitoring systems using satellite technology have been used by all European fishing vessels over 15 metres in length since 2003. In 2013, a vessel monitoring system using satellite and mobile phone options was introduced in the UK for vessels of 12 metres and over in length. These systems are widely used as a monitoring and management tool.

On 4 October 2018 Defra launched a consultation on proposals to make it a legal requirement for all British licensed under 12 metre vessels to have Inshore Vessel Monitoring Systems

(I-VMS) fitted if they operate in English waters. The consultation closes on 14 November 2018.
