There is a new set of regulations for measuring native oysters that are removed from the Fal oyster and mussel fisheries. The recommendation, that the ring through which native oysters (Ostrea edulis) must pass should be increased to 72mm, has been agreed by the Fisheries Minister and a new set of regulations was confirmed by Defra to be applied from 18 August 2025
The change is in Regulation no.2 which prescribes that a person must not remove from the fishery area any oyster (Ostrea edulis) which will pass through a circular aperture of 72mm diameter when the shell is laid flat across the aperture, but shall immediately return the oyster to the sea. The new size is similar to those used in other UK oyster fisheries.
The recommendation for this change had significant support from Fal oyster licence holders. This change means that more oysters will remain in the fishery to breed. This will contribute to the long-term health of the fishery which supports the livelihoods of many licensed fishermen who may only use traditional sail and oar powered vessels to tow their oyster dredges or who gather oysters by hand.
