Consultation for Crustacean and Molluscan Fisheries (Vessel Specifications) Byelaw 2024

This consultation is now closed

At its meeting on 20 December 2024, the members of Cornwall IFCA voted to make the Crustacean and Molluscan Fisheries (Vessel Specifications) Byelaw 2024.

The formal consultation on this byelaw closed at 23:59 on 13 February 2025.

We would like to hear from you if you are in favour of this byelaw or if you feel that the restrictions would negatively affect your interests. It is really important that, wherever possible, you are able to include information about the financial or other impacts on you and your business, as well as providing supporting evidence with your comments.

This byelaw has been made to improve the management of inshore crustacean fisheries by reducing the maximum size and storage capacity of vessels using pots or nets to fish for these species within the Cornwall IFCA district.  The byelaw will:

  • Introduce a 12m maximum overall length for a mono-hull vessel, a 10m maximum overall length for a multi-hull vessel and prohibit the use of a below deck vivier tank exceeding two cubic metres, for vessels using pots and nets to fish for crustacean species within the Cornwall IFCA district; and
  • Prescribe a 16.46m maximum overall length for vessels fishing for molluscan species within the Cornwall IFCA district, maintaining the restriction currently applied by the Cornwall Sea Fisheries District Shellfish Boats Byelaw 2011, which this byelaw will revoke.
